How to Order Food in Spanish: Restaurant & Tapas Phrases

Ordering in Spanish is one of the most useful things you can rehearse before a trip. Here are the phrases to get the menu, order well, handle dietary needs, and pay — plus the small cultural notes that separate a tourist from someone who's done this before.

Usted is safe; tú is common in casual spots

With waiters, the formal usted (¿Me trae…?, ¿Qué nos recomienda?) is always respectful and correct. In Spain you'll often hear friendly tú with servers (¿Me pones…?), and that's fine too — but if you're unsure, usted never offends.

Getting started

¿Me trae la carta, por favor?

meh TRAH-eh lah KAR-tah

Could you bring the menu, please?

¿Qué nos recomienda?

Paying

lah KWEN-tah

The bill, please.

¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta?

PWEH-doh pah-GAR kon tar-HEH-tah

Can I pay by card?

¿Está incluida la propina?

es-TAH een-kloo-EE-dah lah proh-PEE-nah

Tips to sound natural

  • In a tapas bar, order to share — raciones are full plates, tapas are small, medias raciones are in between.
  • ¿Qué nos recomienda? is the fastest way to the good local dish and shows you're open to it.
  • Tipping is modest in Spain and most of Latin America — rounding up or a few coins is plenty.
  • Quisiera… ("I would like…") is a softer, more polite way to order than Quiero… ("I want…").

Questions about this scenario

Should I use tú or usted with a waiter in Spanish?

Usted is always safe and respectful (¿Me trae…?). In Spain, friendly tú with servers (¿Me pones…?) is also common and normal. When in doubt, default to usted — it never causes offense.

How do tapas and raciones differ when ordering?

Tapas are small portions, raciones are full plates meant to share, and medias raciones are half-plates. In a tapas bar you typically order several to share across the table rather than one dish each.

How can I practice ordering food in Spanish?

Rehearse the full back-and-forth — menu, recommendation, order, special requests, paying — not just a memorized line. Renza simulates the restaurant scene in Spanish (Spain or Latin America) with feedback after.
